Ultimate Frisbee, the fastest-growing sport in the country, is popular among students at MCC where it is said that “indi ka taga-MCC kon indi ka kabalo mag-Frisbee” (“You’re not from MCC if you don’t know how to play Frisbee”).
It has been part of the “quality well-rounded Christian education” MCC offers following its introduction by Mark Stam, an American missionary, during visits to the campus several years after it was first brought by foreign tourists to Boracay in 2002.
Over the years, it has been taught in physical education classes and played during intramurals and inter-barkada competitions. Boys and girls, even those who are not the athletic type, usually enjoy the late afternoons throwing and catching a flying plastic disc under towering acacia trees on the spacious school grounds. It is one reason why students say, “it’s more fun in Maranatha”.
After graduation, many continue to play for recreation and even for competition. MCC high school alumni represent their respective departments in college and university intramurals. Some join teams that play in tournaments scheduled year-round in various parts of the country.
One of them is Edgar Sumbi Jr. whose leaping prowess earned him a spot in the Pilipinas Pirates Mixed Team that dominated the 2023 and 2024 Asia Oceanic Beach Ultimate Championship held in Manila and Japan respectively.
Having “more fun in Maranatha” has brought him success in Ultimate Frisbee.
